Gum Disease May Lead To Stroke Or Heart Attack

Patients with periodontal disease are more likely to suffer from atherosclerosis, a narrowing of the arteries that can lead to stroke or heart attack, than patients with healthy gum.

Research has shown that the bacteria that causes gum disease can migrate throughout the body via blood stream and stimulate the immune system, causing inflammation that results in buildup of deposits in the arteries. Higher levels of this bacteria associated with periodontal (gum) disease can lead to increased Carotid artery thickness.

Because gum infections are preventable and treatable, taking care of your oral health can have a positive impact on your cardiovascular health.

Link Between Periodontal Disease and Pregnancy

Latest research has explored a link between periodontal (gum) bacteria and pre-eclampsia in pregnancy. Study has found that 50% of the placentas from women with pre-eclampsia were tested positive for one or more periodontal bacteria (vs. 14.3% in healthy women).

There are other studies that link periodontal disease with pre-mature labor. There are many reasons a woman can be diagnosed with pre-mature labor, including bacterial infection. Studies have also showen that 30% of pre-mature labor is linked to bacteria from gum disease. Women who are pregnant or considering pregnancy should speak with their dentist about their oral health and pregnancy.
